Process overview
Sublimation uses heat-sensitive dye inks printed on special transfer paper. Under heat (typically 180–200 °C) and medium-to-high pressure (applied via heat press), the solid dye transitions directly to gas phase (sublimes), penetrates the surface of compatible substrates, and bonds molecularly during cooling. Result: permanent, full-color image integrated into the material (no surface layer).
A standard iron work for small/simple transfers on polyester fabrics or coated items, getting consistent results requires some practice
Compatible substrates
- Polyester fabrics or polyester-coated textiles (≥60–70% polyester content for best dye uptake)
- Polymer-coated hard surfaces: ceramics, metals, glass, MDF, hardboard, some plastics
- Not suitable for: pure cotton, untreated metals, most untreated synthetics
Substrate must withstand 180–200 °C and pressure without deformation.
Transfer onto untreated wood is possible, however since there's no white dye colors will be skewed.
Application
- Print design mirror-image on sublimation paper (we handle this step).
- Align printed sheet face-down on substrate.
- Apply heat + pressure (time/temp/pressure depend on material; typical ranges: 45–60 s at 190 °C for textiles, 180–240 s for ceramics).
- Peel cold or warm (per material spec).
Makerspace option
Heat press available during open sessions or Wednesday's Makers Nights. Order prior and bring your blanks; use the equipment on-site (settings guidance provided).
